Going Forward with Kindness, Pity, Joy and Sacrifice. The practice of The Four Immeasurable States of Mind (Note 1) including kindness, pity, joy and sacrifice requires practitioners, to begin with sacrifice so that they can correspond to move forward from giving up greed, desire, longing, love and thirst; however, this immeasurable mind of impartiality requires practitioners bearing a sacrifice mind with diligence and courage. The so-called immeasurable is to give an infinite number of sentient beings as clamber upon conditions with immeasurable blessings and to benefit them all equally. Therefore, it is necessary to spread the doctrine of breaking through the incorrect view of having a self to give up greed, desire, memory, love and thirst for the benefit of the world. Kindness can give joy, it can remove the anger and worry in life. Pity can pull out pain, it can remove the trouble in life. Joy is caused by sentient beings’ separation from pain, it can remove the unhappiness in life. Sacrifice is impartially caring all beings to give up love and hatred, it can remove the love and hatred in life. With this mind of kindness, pity, joy and sacrifice, even the Brahman-heaven King cultivated the same practice of kindness, pity, joy and sacrifice. However, if practitioners do not know the truth of suffering of the incorrect view of having a self, it is difficult for them to leave the three realms. Note 1: Four immeasurable states of mind: immeasurable mind of kindness (慈无量心) immeasurable mind of pity (悲无量心) immeasurable mind of joy ( 喜无量心) immeasurable mind of impartiality (舍无量心)
